The Residences at Kalamaʻula
Kalamaʻula, Molokaʻi · Affordable Kūpuna Housing
About the Project
The Residences at Kalamaʻula is Hawaiʻi's first beneficiary-led affordable kūpuna rental community — 47 thoughtfully designed homes on the historic Kalamaʻula Homestead on Molokaʻi, where Native Hawaiian elders can age in place surrounded by the land, culture, and community they have always called home.
Led by Kalanianaʻole Development in partnership with the Kalamaʻula Homestead Association and King Lunalilo Trust, this project is built by and for the people it serves.
What Sets This Project Apart
Affordable by design — 47 rental units with rents capped at 30% of income, ensuring kūpuna are never priced out of their own community
Culturally rooted — dedicated spaces for hula, storytelling, traditional crafts, and Hawaiian food preparation to foster intergenerational connection
Comprehensive support — wellness programs, healthcare referrals, and tailored services designed around the needs of kūpuna
Community-driven — developed in true partnership with homestead beneficiaries and trusted Native Hawaiian organizations
A Model for the State
The Residences at Kalamaʻula is more than a housing project — it is a proof of concept for what kūpuna housing can and should look like across Hawaiʻi. By blending affordability with cultural enrichment and community wellness, this initiative sets a new standard for how we care for our elders — with dignity, intention, and aloha.
